Pumpkins are widely recognized as the ornament which kicks off autumn festivities. Starting almost as early as late summer people start applying pumpkin to everything, from popular coffee recipes to centerpieces. Although, they probably don’t think to apply those pumpkins to their skin. But they should! Whether you visit your local pumpkin patch or your grocery store, those pumpkins can be turned into purees and applied right to your skin for a boost in vitamins that are optimal for skin health.

Pumpkin & Your Skin Health

Pumpkin has a variety of skin health benefits because it’s packed with vitamins A, C, and E. But what does this all mean? Let’s take a closer look.

Vitamins & Minerals

Pumpkins far and wide are packed with Vitamin A, which is known for helping produce wrinkle fighting, skin-health boosting, collagen. It also helps reduce darker spots on the skin — like sun spots and age spots — giving your skin a more even appearance. Plus, Vitamin A helps exfoliate your skin, keeping your pores sparkling clean. But wait, there’s still more! Pumpkins contain zinc, which is also known to help treat acne prone skin.

In addition to Vitamin A, pumpkins also contain Vitamin C, which is also an antioxidant. It too helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and can help reduce the appearance of damage caused by the sun, as well as protect your skin from free radicals. Vitamin E is in those pumpkins, as well. It has long been known to act as a moisturizer and anti-inflammatory on the skin, helping to reduce inflammation caused by sun damage.

While eating a diet high in Vitamin A is always good to help support your skin, you should consume Vitamin A rich foods with fats to help absorption. Vitamin C & E are also easily consumed through your dietary choices, so you likely don’t need to supplement them. However, your skin is amazing at absorbing Vitamins A, C, and E…and you guessed it, that pumpkin patch pumpkin is rich in all three!

It’s Time to Pumpkin

Visiting the pumpkin patch in the fall is such a great way to start getting into the holiday the season. Often, we purchase pumpkins to carve out the jack-o-lantern, but they soon just shrivel up and turn into even more ghoulish figures. But the good news is, you can always bake those big pumpkins and harvest their pulp to make a puree that can be applied right to your skin.

*IMPORTANT* Pumpkin Puree Safety

Keep in mind that a pumpkin that has been carved shouldn’t be used, unless it has been stored in a cold place for less than a day. Even then, it’s advisable to be cautious. Bacteria is quick to produce, so always remember, safety first! Consider using a fresh grocery store or pumpkin patch pumpkin to make your puree…and be sure to store it correctly, too!

Un-Pumpkin Season

When the pumpkin patch is a months out of reach, or if you didn’t freeze pumpkin puree from your holiday baking adventures, you can always head to the grocery store’s baking aisle and purchase a can of pure pumpkin puree. Yes, you can apply it right out of the can.

Applying Your Pumpkin

You will find a variety of pumpkin recipes online for scrubs, masks, and more. Be sure to read the instructions as to how long to leave each on your skin. You can also simply apply plain pumpkin puree right to your skin and leave it for at least 30 minutes. Repeat the process regularly, as it will likely take a little time to see the results. Just rest assured, you’re helping your skin with every application.

Be sure that you’re using quality ingredients in your recipes. As you know, your skin is your largest organ. You want to make sure that what you put on it is as good as what you put in your body, too.
