Frequently Asked Questions
How Does CoolSculpting® Elite Work?
CoolSculpting® Elite uses a technique called cryolipolysis to take advantage of the fact that fat freezes at a higher temperature than skin. This means that a temperature cold enough to freeze and disrupt fat cells will not cause any harm to the skin. The body will then naturally clear away these fat cells naturally over weeks to months, leaving you with a more sculpted figure.
Am I a Good Candidate for CoolSculpting® Elite?
Ideal candidates already lead a healthy lifestyle and are within 25 pounds of their target weight but have stubborn areas of fat left to lose. People who should not have CoolSculpting® Elite treatment include those who have medical conditions that make them sensitive to cold or who have scarring disorders.
What Should I Expect?
- Before the Treatment: At your consultation, we will work with you to determine if you’re a candidate for CoolSculpting and develop a customized plan to treat stubborn fat on one of 9 FDA-cleared areas of the body.
- During the Treatment: Depending on the area, one treatment can take as little as 35 minutes. We may recommend multiple treatments to help achieve the best results. Since treatments are noninvasive, you’ll be able to catch up on your reading, listen to a podcast, or even take a nap during your session. Afterwards, you’re free to get back to your busy day.
- After the Treatment: Results may be seen as early as 1 to 3 months after treatment, with full results taking 6 months or more. Be sure to complete your recommended treatment plan to see the best fat elimination results.
What Results Will I See with CoolSculpting® Elite?
You may start to see results from your treatment after as little as a month. You will see the most dramatic results after three to six months when the body has had time to remove all the damaged fat cells. The treated areas will look noticeably slimmer and sculpted, and the definition of muscles underneath will become more visible.
Is There Any Downtime with CoolSculpting® Elite?
You may see redness and swelling that lasts a few days, but this should not keep you from returning to all your normal activities right away. Because the treatment does not harm the skin, there is no downtime required.

What are the Risks of Coolsculpting® Elite?
Coolsculpting® Elite is the safest type of Coolsculpting procedure. Over the last decade Coolsculpting devices have been improved to squeeze tissue less during treatment leading to decreased potential side effects. The most concerning side effect is Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH). This causes the treated area to get larger instead of smaller and the tissue becomes more rubbery in consistency. Liposuction or the non-surgical injection Kybella is usually successful in improving this condition dramatically. Overall, since the beginning of Coolsculpting a decade ago, the incidence of PAH is 1 in 3,000 cycles. When the first upgraded system called Cool Advantage was developed (and we were the one of the first in the Northeast to upgrade to it in 2016), the incidence of PAH was reduced by 75%. The newest system, Coolsculpting® Elite, has further improved on the safety of the 2016 system. Other rare side effects include hyperpigmentation (darkening) of the treatment area. This occurs in 1 in 11.000 cycles and can be improved with a variety of treatments. Compared to surgical liposuction, minimally invasive laser assisted fat reduction and non-invasive heat-based laser fat reduction, Coolsculpting® Elite is the safest and least painful alternative.
